" A Monkey with only half its brain could be eating feces, picking its nose, and installing this wheel all at once and still get it right the first time "

Title: Wingman Formula Force GP by Logitech

   Format: Steering wheel for PC

   Reviewing Monkey: Simi N.

The Hype: Feel what really happens on the racetrack. Force feedback lets you feel the road, bumps, walls, and crashes.

      What This Monkey Thought...

Ergonomics: The steering wheel feels pretty nice. The rubber lets you get a good grip on the wheel, and the it’s shaped so that almost any hand position you can think of will feel comfortable. The button location is OK if you hold the wheel with your hands at 9 and 3 o’clock. But if, like me, you place your hands a 10 and 2, the buttons are kind of a pain in the ass because you have to constantly move your hands down the wheel to hit them. The pedals feel good, but it might take some time to get used to the fact that these pedals are anchored at the bottom to the pedal base whereas in most cars the pedals are held at the top by bars going up. 4 out of 5

Features: Let it be said, I love force feedback. Good force feedback can add to a game like few other things. Even though having it can make some games harder- it is only because it’s more realistic, and thus it is cool. So, of course, that was one of the main features on this wheel for me. Happily, I can say the force feedback worked well and ranks high on my list of praise. Unfortunately, I can’t speak quite as positively of the software that comes with the controller. Called the Wingman Profiler, this program lets you set up exactly what you want your wheel to do in your games. The "unfortunate" part comes in its overall interface, of which we’ve seen several better with other controllers. So, in the end, you probably won’t get too much use out of it, but it is good for that game that just won’t let you set the wheel up the way you want to. 4 out of 5

Performance: The only performance problems I encountered are with the physical design of the wheel and pedals. The wheel only clamps on the part with the wheel itself, so the back isn’t held down. Thus you had better not pull the wheel towards yourself too hard or you may end up breaking the clamp system. The problem with the pedals lies in their base. To put it simply, it isn’t heavy enough. The pedals constantly slide away from my feet whenever I race, forcing me to pause the game and pull the base back towards my every once in a while. This is not a huge problem, and can be fixed by propping the pedal base against something a little more solid, but I get pissed off when something forces me to use my brain just because the designers didn’t use theirs. 3 out of 5

Installation: Probably the most painless installation I have ever dealt with on any computer in my entire life. A Monkey with only half its brain could be eating feces, picking its nose, and installing this wheel all at once and still get it right the first time. The first step is to make sure the wires are all connected (not to difficult with the instructions). Then, plug in the controller, put in the Wingman CD and follow the program instructions. The whole process shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes, and you will be ready to race. 5 out of 5

System Compatibility: This wheel works with Windows 98 and above, and even on my computer there are no problems present. That may not seem to impressive to you, but trust me my computer goes out of its way to make sure that nothing I want to use will work. The wheel seems to work perfectly on many other computers as well. 5 out of 5

How it Compares: This Steering wheel is one of the best I have ever used. Functionally it is almost perfect. It looks and feels nice, and is easy as hell to install. The only thing that this doesn’t have that at least one other wheel does is a faux leather grip. But as nice as one of those would be, this wheel doesn’t need it to be awesome. 4 out of 5

   The Verdict:

Force Feedback, easy installation, and a great feel make this Steering wheel one to get.

The Good: Nice design, Easy to install, crisp control and button response, and Force Feedback!!

The Bad: The pedal base isn’t heavy enough, and I wish I could secure the back of the Wheel down onto the desk so I wouldn’t be afraid of breaking the clamps all the time.

The Overall Ugly: This steering wheel will make your racing games much, much more fun. The wheel has a few problems, but over all is flat out awesome.

What it's Worth: This wheel sells for about $100.00 and is worth every penny.
